Prevalence and Characterization of Food Insecurity Among Pediatric Emergency Department Visits

Dr. Ellie MacBain, PGY2

Supervisor: Dr. Quang Ngo

Food insecurity is common and associated with numerous effects on child health and development. Identification of households affected by food insecurity is important to develop interventions. We have developed a screening survey to gather information on the prevalence of food insecurity and potential associated demographic and health information to be distributed to families of pediatric patients attending the ED at McMaster Children’s and Hamilton General Hospital.

Objectives:

  1. Become familiar with national trends and health effects of food insecurity
  2. Learn about neighbourhood – level health inequalities in Hamilton
  3. Discuss ethical and inclusion challenges of research involving vulnerable populations
