Next Steps for Patient and Family Engagement in Child Health Research: Recruitment, training, and collaboration opportunities
Dr. Karen Beattie, Associate Professor, Department of Pediatrics, Co-Chair, Family Advisory Council, McMaster Children’s Hospital, &
Dr. Andrea Cross, Post-Doctoral Fellow, CanChild
With a framework in place for engaging patients and families in research at different levels and stages of involvement, the next logical question is, “now what”? In this session, Dr. Karen Beattie will discuss strategies for recruiting youth and family caregivers for involvement in research, and the process for how researchers can become connected with youth and family partners. She will share strategies and tools from her own experiences as a researcher, parent, family advocate and engagement leader that will support your partnerships with youth and parents/caregivers to ensure meaningful, productive engagement. Dr. Andrea Cross will share information and opportunities for participation in the McMaster-0based Family Engagement in Research (FER) Course – an internationally recognized course that to date has trained 361 researchers and families from 18 countries. She will also describe the Patient and Family Engagement in Research Community of Practice (CoP), which is about to launch in the Department of Pediatrics (July 2023). The CoP aims to bring together researchers and patient and family partners to promote collaboration and support the implementation of meaningful patient and family engagement best practices across the Department.
